About Us
We are the Northumberland Ladies County Golf Association founded in November 1920 by a group of 28 ladies from 6 Northumberland Clubs who met together to discuss whether a County Club would be of any benefit to Northumberland. They decided it would! The first committee of Northumberland Ladies Golf Club (as it was called until 1932) was formed from representatives of the 6 founding clubs, Alnmouth, Hexham, Gosforth, Whitley Bay, Tynemouth and Berwick.
What We Do
The aim of the Northumberland Ladies County Golf Association is the promotion and encouragement of golf throughout the County within the framework of the R&A Rules of Golf and England Golf.
How We Work
We organise County Competitions and coaching for adults and juniors who are members of Golf Clubs affiliated to NLCGA. These competitions cater for all abilities, ranging from new to golf ladies and girls right up to elite players, some of whom have represented England at home and abroad.
What We Want to Achieve
With its winning combination of exercise and social interaction golf is the perfect game from age 8 to 80 (and beyond!) The unique handicap system means everybody can play together either socially or competitively. We want to help ladies enjoy the benefits that golf can offer, friendship, fresh air and exercise, golf has it all.
How we Govern
We have Rules of the Association and Bye Laws, these are included at the bottom of this page in Policies and Important Documents.

A message from the President
Viv Younger - President
I am both delighted and honoured to be serving as President of the NLCGA for the next two years and am looking forward to supporting our new Captain, Helen McChlery, Vice-Captain, Debbie Reape, and our hard working NLCGA committee. We anticipate having another successful season with the county team and the junior girls, and hope that the weather is as good as it was last year for our NLCGA internal competitions and the Shield teams. I hope to see lots of new faces and familiar faces at these events.
This is a thought for your 2026 golf season from Professional golfer, the late Ben Hogan:-
“Reverse every natural instinct and do the opposite of what you are inclined to do, and you will probably come very close to having a perfect golf swing!”
If only it was that easy!
Wishing you all a happy, healthy and successful 2026.
With kind regards
Viv Younger

A message from the Captain
Helen McChlery - Captain
Being Captain for Northumberland ladies golf is a high point in my life. I’m looking forward to the year ahead working closely with our president Viv Younger and my Vice-Captain Debbie Reape alongside a resolute executive committee. They work extremely hard behind the scenes to make sure everything runs like clockwork and give up a huge amount of time to support women’s and girls’ Golf in Northumberland. Angela Rumney and Julie Sampson will continue to steer me in the right direction as Team Manager and both as selectors.
The County championships 2026 will be held at City Of Newcastle golf club 24th – 26th of May 2026. The format will be 36 hole stroke play from which there will be eight finalists who will qualify for the match play and compete to be 2026 champion. The junior championship will run concurrently along with the extremely popular Jenny Lee Smith competition which is an 18 hole Stableford competition for players with a handicap up to 29. I’m delighted that City Of Newcastle will be hosting this event as this will be My Home club for 2026. I’m extremely impressed with the course and the clubhouse.
County Match week will take place 7-10 Jun at Eaglescliffe, just a stone’s throw from Northumberland, so we would love to see a sea of Red cheering our team of Champions on. I will give all my energy into having another successful year and hopefully gaining a place in the National Championship. We have a pool of talented players that have the ability to flourish. If we are successful then national match week will be held at Betchworth Park Golf Club near Dorking on 28-31 Jul 26.
Matfen, which is my spiritual home of Golf has also pledged their course for the autumn meeting which will be an exciting experience with some amazing course architecture to be checked out.
I’m absolutely thrilled that Bamburgh has offered to give up their course for the entire day for my charity. I have broken from the norm this year and chosen two charities, the first being Friends of Priory which is a special school in Hexham that caters for Northumberland wide children with severe, profound and multiple learning disabilities. The second charity is the People’s kitchen which is very close to my heart, as I was a member of the armed forces and I’ve seen many fall on hard times and turn to places like this for their daily assistance. As well as this charity day I will also be running in a 25 km trail run. I can honestly say I haven’t ran further than 15 miles since I was 30 years old, so this will be a challenge. I will also run various initiatives throughout the year to make sure that the charities are well gifted. Donations can be made at any time of the year please contact me if you would like to do so.
I look forward to the role and I’m bursting with enthusiasm to get to see you all at the various competitions and hopefully welcome some new golfers to the fold

The NLCGA are proud to have achieved accreditation for our Women In Charter on February 9 th , 2023.
The Charter is a commitment from the Executive to promote the opportunities for golf throughout the County. We do this through a number of initiatives and actions working as a team, and by supporting Delegates from the Ladies Associations in the Clubs around Northumberland, with whom we meet with regularly.
We encourage new to golf programs and particularly work with juniors through a program which provides a pathway from learning to play, understanding rules and etiquette to potential Club membership.
We are delighted that our efforts to increase participation at County events which include individual and team golf, along with some fun, social golf.
We are proud of being a SafeGolf accreditation and we ensure policies and procedures remain up to date and support our clubs to become. and then maintain. their SafeGolf accreditations. To achieve the above, we have a designated a Charter Champion and a Junior, Charter Champion within the County who can assist with the promotion and reporting of the charter.

In November 2020 the World Handicap System (WHS) came into effect.
Players now have a Handicap Index rather than a Handicap. The Handicap Index is calculated as the average of the best 8 from the last 20 scores (score differentials) in a player’s record. Any queries regarding your Handicap Index should, in the first instance, be directed to your Club Handicap Secretary or Committee.
If they are unable to answer or resolve your query, please then refer to Gemma Duxfield, our County Handicap Advisor
There is information on the England Golf Website regarding WHS. Please see the link to the WHS Toolkit. England Golf WHS Toolkit
