The weather was kind to us this year for the County Championship and the Jenny Lee Smith Trophy with blazing sunshine on all three days. Day one of the Championship saw 19 players battling it out over 36 holes, with the top 8 progressing to the matchplay quarter finals on day 2. Amelia Temperley of Morpeth Golf Club was the top qualifier with a score of -5 to par gross followed by defending Champion Rebecca Ferguson of Tynemouth Golf Club. The quarter finals were played to a very high standard with some excellent golf and close matches, however there always has to be a winner and Amelia, June Lomax, Coralie Watson and Rebecca progressed to the semi finals which were played on the morning of day 3. In the first semi final Amelia beat June 1 up on the 19th hole! In the second semi final Rebecca beat Coralie with an impressive run of birdies. So a short break for lunch then the battle of the defending Champion and the young challenger. This developed into a battle royale with Rebecca eventually winning the match on the 19th hole. Amelia didn’t go away empty handed as she became the Junior Champion. Congratulations to all competitors for some excellent golf.
The Jenny Lee Smith Trophy is a stableford competition between round one and round two of the
championship. This year it was won by Lindsey Whittaker of Matfen Hall with Kathryn Archibald of Alnmouth runner up.
