County Captain’s Fund Raiser Friday 26th October at Burgham Park Golf Club

25 teams of 4 took part in the fund raiser playing a reverse Stableford waltz. The players were greeted by County Competitions Secretary Patricia Luckey, who signed them in and issued the cards and Moira Tait the County Treasurer, who as the title suggests extracted money from them for the raffle and 4Ball draw.

With tees from 9am until after 1pm the players set out in very chilly weather. Our starters were County President Carol Ramsey and the County Captain’s husband Geoff Brown, taking it in turns so they didn’t get hypothermia. The earlier starters had the better weather with those in the afternoon feeling the brunt of the additional temperature drop and horizontal rain.

As the frozen competitors returned their cards they were invited to warm themselves with the super buffet of chilli, chicken korma, wedges, rice, various pies and cold cuts with salad, all made by the Burgham catering team. Some lucky ones also got to sample their very tasty cakes and scones, supplied as extras as the kitchen folks practised their baking skills through the day.

With the scorecards checked there was a mini presentation to those who stayed. The prizes were gratefully received and a lovely thank you speech made by Vicky Corner one of the winning team from Parklands. See below for the list of winners.

The day was a great fund raising success. The raffle made over £200. The 4 Ball draw, where teams who entered were guaranteed to get a 4Ball that was not for their own club, raised well over £400. The whole event raised about £1500 for the County which will help towards team coaching/expenses and for 2020, which is both our centenary year and when we host County Match Week.

I would like to thank Kevin Gow, the manager and professional of Burgham Park Golf Club, for being our host for the day. His support of the County has been outstanding, along with his wife and the extended family who do the catering. The feedback from everyone, players and organisers alike, was that a great day was had by all. The course was in great condition, the clubhouse very welcoming and the food more than hit the spot.

My thanks also go to the following clubs for their support through raffle prizes and/or 4Balls. Alnwick Castle, Arcot, Backworth, Bamburgh, Bedlington, Burgham Park, City of Newcastle, Close House, Foxton, Gosforth, Hexham, Longhirst, Matfen Hall, Morpeth, Newbiggin, Northumberland, Parklands, Ponteland, Stocksfield, Tynemouth, Tyneside and Westerhope.
The prize for 1st place was a Newcastle Racecourse race day package for 4 and 2nd prize was a 3 course meal for 4 at the Border Minstrel. These were donated by Arena Racing (ARC) and my thanks go to David Williamson Executive Director Newcastle Racecourse.
